Post-resurrection Peace … the true peace of Christ

Love, joy, peace Here's what the Irish Jesuits at Sacred Space are saying about true peace …

Even though we once knew Christ from a human point of view, we know him no longer in that way. (2 Corinthians. 5:16)

In the period after the Resurrection, the little community of Christians grew round the presence of Jesus; but it was a mysterious sort of presence. He showed himself as one bringing peace, and that was his greeting.

Given the humanly hopeless situation of the disciples, the notion of peace might seem like a vapid optimism – "hopefully things will turn out alright." Jesus' peace is not like that. He knows the score. His peace does not depend on politics or people or places or the weather, but on his infinitely compassionate, strong presence.

It sometimes required time to recognize his presence: it was only after Jesus had left them that the disciples on the road to Emmaus realized how their hearts were burning. Lord, make me alert to your presence.
