How will the young woman bear a child without a bridegroom?
Or as an Advent liturgy in the Anglican book of Common Prayer asks:
How can He whom nothing can contain, upon whom none can gaze, dwell in the womb of a virgin who He Himself has formed? And how shall I conceive God the Word, who with the Father and the Spirit has no beginning?
The angel Gabriel’s answer to the virgin Mary gives us a picture into the beauty, mystery and glory of the Trinity …
“And the angel answered her, ‘The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most high will overshadow you, therefore the child to be born will be called holy — the Son of God.”
Is it any wonder that decade after decade, and century after century artists and musicians alike have tried to capture the essence of these words?
And is it any wonder that perhaps our own best response is to merely quiet our hearts and wonder.
“I wonder as I wonder out under the sky, how Jesus the Savior did come for to die. … “
