Breathing grace on those around you!

Years ago I was coaching a co-ed park district soccer team of 1st and 2nd graders.  One Saturday morning before a game I gathered the team in a huddle just before we started.  One little girl came running up late.  She said, “I just got out of bed.”

Her hair was a mess.  She was wearing her long flannel pajama pants along with her untied soccer cleats.  When she joined our circle suddenly the other players backed off.  One of them actually blurted out, “Eeww, your breath stinks.”  (Ah yes, kids can be so sweet to other kids!)

It’s true. The poor little thing had morning breath … really bad.  I got that resolved, sort of, by giving her a Juicy Box before we went on the field.

The other day I read Jesus’ words from John 20:22

And with that he breathed on them and
said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.”

I thought to myself, “I want to be a person who breathes grace on other people.”  I’m trying to be more intentional in trying to do that.  I have the Spirit of Christ living in me, and I am daily trying to draw on that power to bring his love, mercy, gentleness, forgiveness, strength, and wisdom to the conflicts of daily life.

Friends, our breath of grace on others can quiet anger, encourage repentance and reconciliation and bring understanding where there is confusion.

So who can you breathe grace on today?  I promise you, there’s no one who won’t like the smell of that…
