Come Holy Spirit…

A central figure in the Christmas story is the Holy Spirit …

* He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice because of his birth, 15 for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He is never to take wine or other fermented drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even before he is born.   Luke 1:14-15 (The angel Gabriel speaking to Zechariah, the father of John’s the Baptist)

* 35 The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be calledthe Son of God.  Luke 1:35

* 41 When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. Luke 1:41

* 67 His father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied:
68 “Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel,
because he has come to his people and redeemed them.  Luke 1:67-68

* 26 It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. 27 Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts. When the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the custom of the Law required, 28 Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying: 29 “Sovereign Lord, as you have promised, you may now dismiss your servant in peace. Luke 2:26-28

God’s message, then, to us this Advent season is clear:

15 Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is. 18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, 20 always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.  Ephesians 5:15-20

FriendsIf the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, and he is, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you.  Romans 8:11
Prayer:  “Holy Spirit, we praise and worship you during this season of Advent when we expectantly and patiently await your coming.  Great Mystery who lives within us, cause the fruit of your Spirit to ripen in our lives in ever increasing abundance … Fill us with love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.  Compel us to love our enemies and treating everyone we meet in the very way that we want them to treat us.
