To me, after 36 years of marriage, the grace of God beats all the other factors in creating a lasting marriage. Thus, I pray for young people seeking out lifelong companions today, asking that God will shower them with his grace and mercy, just as he has upon me in my marriage. I like Betsy VandenBerghe’s piece in First Things Magazine (7/14/2014) on unsolicited Advice on how to find a mate.
I frequently think of what the New York Times columnist David Brooks once said to college graduates during a commencement speech:
“If you have a great marriage and a crappy career, you will be happy [and] if you have a great career and a crappy marriage, you will be unhappy.”
