You don’t get a second chance at today … You get a first chance!

Today the name of your church changes!!

When my daughter was a student at Anderson University in Anderson, IN, she lived in an apartment near Second Chance Baptist Church and walked by it everyday going to class.

I felt a strong sense of grace and mercy when I walked by the church.  But you know what?  God’s mercies are new every day.  As the great hymn says of those mercies, “They are new every morning, new every morning. Great is thy faithfulness, O Lord.  Great is they faithfulness.”

The older brother in the story of the lost son in Luke 15 was incensed when the Father welcomed the lost brother home and threw a huge party for him.  This vagabond, this loser, this derelict … this son … now returned home with nothing but this speech: “Father I have sinned against heaven and before you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.  Make me like one of your hired servants.”

Why was the older brother, the faithful, hard-working son so amazed?  Because the lavish party the Father threw was not a second chance party, but a first chance party.  The older brother saw it.  He knew it.  It was so outlandish, so unbelievable, so first-chance like, he was aghast.

And the Father merely smiled and said, “You’re right, son.  That’s the kind of father I am.”

Is that the kind of God you and I have today?  Indeed, this is the day the Lord has made.  Today he loves you and says, “You are my daughter.  I love you.  I am proud of you.  Welcome to the family.”

Welcome to the Church of the First Chance

Keep your head high sons and daughters.  Enjoy the brand new day full of first chances.
