That’s the title of my talk for this coming Saturday morning’s men’s prayer breakfast. Well, I know some of the reasons why I don’t pray, and I’ll talk about them briefly. But not for long.
Actually, I do pray. So do you. So does your neighbor. So do the El Salvadoran men in this picture. I contend that even most agnostics and atheists pray. If you come to the Vineyard this Saturday morning (7:45-10am–a delicious breakfast is just $5), you’ll get to participate in, and pray, all sorts of prayer. It will certainly be interesting, and we’ll just wait and see what God does.
If you know me at all, you know that I enjoy preaching. But Jesus didn’t teach us how to preach. He did teach us how to pray. Even though I’ll be the leader this Saturday, I’ll be leading from the pre-school of prayer. Have you ever been called a prayer warrior? Well, neither have I. But that doesn’t matter. We’re going to prayer. So get ready.
By the way, for the many reasons and excuses I can give for not praying, I can think of 7 reasons that I do pray and want to prayer even more than I do:
1. I need help. Thus, I will keep making petitition.
2. Others need help. Thus, I will keep interceding.
3. I need forgiveness. Thus, I will continue confessing my sins.
4. I am grateful. Thus, I will give thanks without ceasing.
5. I know who God is. Thus, I will worship him with every breath.
6. Christ is indeed Lord. Thus, I will consecrate myself to him repeatedly.
7. I desire him. Thus, I will exalt him day by day above all else.
If you come this Saturday, I can assure you that you’ll find one prayer that I suggest that you’ll want to put in your arsenal.
Hi-I have learned a lot about prayer since coming on this church plant. Three things come to mind-1. Praying pre-written prayers from the Book of Common Prayer, and especially from the Psalms, are very helpful.2. The more I pray, in terms of sheer number of minutes, the more I enjoy praying.3. Prayer is best in the morning, and best in very quiet places. At least, that is my experience.Did you know that Don Follis is the most important one-on-one mentor of men in the Champaign Vineyard in the past 9 years? I know of no one who has had a greater one-on-one impact on men at that church than Don.Might be worth the five bucks to get breakfast and hear what he has to say.jeff
