Watching for both the birth and the return of Jesus Christ

Watching_advent One of the great Advent themes is watching … watching and waiting for the coming Messiah.  We celebrate the birth of baby Jesus,  as we watch for the return of the reigning King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

Consider the Gospel reading below:

Matthew 24
40 Then two men will be in the field; one will be taken and one left. 41 Two women will be grinding at the mill; one will be taken and one left. 42 Therefore, stay awake, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. 43 But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into. 44 Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.

We know the Lord Jesus is coming back soon, brothers.  It could happen any second, in the twinkling of an eye.

The Apostle Peter writes, "The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness.  He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance."

Be watching, friends.  This is indeed the season for watching, for repenting, for making sure we’re ready for the coming King.

For as the Apostle Peter has also written, "But the day of the Lord will come like a thief.  The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare.  Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be?  You ought to live holy and godly lives as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming."  That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat.  But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, the home of righteousness. (II Peter 3:10-13)

Merry Christmas, men of faith.  Get ready.  The king is coming!
