Confession of Sin

This morning when I awoke and started reading the Scripture the Holy Spirit brought to mind something I said yesterday for which I needed to ask forgiveness. A comment I made to a new Champaign-Urbana pastor was offensive, and I regretted saying it. I already have called the person and asked for forgiveness, which is what I think Jesus asks. In the Sermon on the Mount Jesus says to leave your gift on the altar, if you happen to remember that your brother or sister has something against you.

As part of my regular morning Bible reading and prayer, I often read the confession of sin from the Book of Common Prayer, and I recommend it to you:

“Most merciful God, I confess that I have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what I have done, and by what I have left undone. I have not loved you with my whole heart; I have not loved my neighbors as myself. I am truly sorry and I humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on me and forgive me; that I may delight in your will, and walk in your way, to the glory of your name. Amen.”
